TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - A Tampa man is in jail after he killed his dog, then cooked it.
Police say they received a call from a relative that 25-year-old Elliot Huggins strangled the 5-to-6 month-old family dog, then cut up the canine into quarters and stored it in the freezer for future meals.
Officers found the dog's ribs cooked in a pot on the stove. They say the dog's head was in the garbage.
Huggins is charged with animal cruelty.
I'm a little conflicted on this story. As a normal American, I see dogs as man's best friends, and my initial reaction to this story was that this guy is one sick bastard.
But then I thought more about it -- is a dog really different than a pig? Most of us don't have any problems eating pigs, cows, chicken, etc. I will admit that comparing a dog to a chicken is a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, but pigs are known to have personalities like dogs, and many people keep "the other white meat" as pets.
Also, what if this guy was poor and hungry? There are lots of starving people, and to condemn them for trying to eat just because we have an affinity for dogs seems a bit like faulty morality (caring for an animal over a fellow human being).
Obviously, we don't know the full story or why he did it (maybe that will come out in the court hearings), and I don't know exactly how I feel, but a sad story either way.
